Coalition Endorses Airline Discrimination
Suit Against Delta, Supports Victims
The Sikh Coalition stood with Hansdip Singh at the
steps of the federal courthouse in Newark, New Jersey on
September 16, 2003 as he filed suit against Delta airlines
for airline discrimination. Hansdip
filed suit against Delta after an airline attendant told
him before a flight to maintain a “low profile” because
he was from the Middle East, and told other passengers that
they have to help her restrain him because he would be "trouble"
on the flight. The Sikh Coalition offered a statement
of support at the press conference announcing the law suit.

Coalition on American University Hate Crimes Panel
The South Asian Law Students Association at American University’s
Washington College of Law hosted a screening of the documentary
“Raising Our Voices: South Asian Americans Address Hate,”
on September 22, 2003. The documentary, produced by
the South Asian American Leaders of Tomorrow (SAALT), discusses
hate crimes against South Asians in the United States both
before and after September 11th. The event kicked
off the law school’s diversity week. Harsimran Kaur,
a Washington area attorney, represented the Sikh Coalition
at a post-screening panel discussion.
Pittsburgh
Club to Amends "No Hats" Policy, Coalition Works
with ADL and Victim
The management a Pittsburgh nightclub, has decided
to amend a "no hats policy" after receiving complaints
from Sikh and Jewish groups. On July 18, 2003, Harpreet
Singh Grewal, a local medical doctor, went to the club with
his wife. The owner of the club would not allow him
to enter the club without removing his turban. Harpreet
reported the incident on the Sikh Coalition website.
The Sikh Coalition worked with Harpreet Singh and the local
Anti-Defamation League to request a change in policy since
it violated public accommodations law. The club after
receiving similar complaints from other Sikhs and Sikh organizations,
agreed to allow patrons to wear religiously-mandated
headdress like a turban. The Sikh Coalition would
like to thank the ADL, SMART and other individuals and organizations
that worked for a change in the club's admission policy.
