Sikh Civil Rights Documentary Screening Across United States

Video Deemed a “Must See Video” for All Sikhs

( New York, New York) The Sikh Coalition is proud to announce that Kevin Lee’s documentary, Dastaar: Defending Sikh Identity, will be shown nationwide as part of the 28 th Annual Asian American International Film Festival. The documentary highlights in part the Sikh Coalition’s work to defend the civil rights of Sikhs.

The documentary presents the struggle of the Sikh American community to overcome the hatred, fear and intolerance it faces from fellow Americans due to an essential symbol of the Sikh faith: the dastaar. It explores how media imagery fuels the association of the turban with terrorism, leading to widespread discrimination against Sikh.

Dastaar has already been screened in Chicago as part of the 2005 Asian American Showcase. It will be screened in Los Angeles on Friday April 29, 2005 as part of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. It will play New York City between July 15 and July 31 at the 28 th Annual Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF). After playing in New York City, the documentary will become part of AAIFF’s national tour.

It is rare that Sikh concerns are portrayed on film. The Sikh Coalition thanks Kevin Lee for compellingly capturing the spirit of Sikh civil rights activism at this defining moment in our community’s history. The Coalition also thanks the various film festivals for providing Mr. Lee’s documentary a wider audience.
