How Gurdwaras Can Increase Visibility and Appreciation for Sikhs

A few weeks ago, the Sikh Coalition provided some suggestions on what individuals can do to increase visibility and appreciation for Sikhs in your city, in the wake of the Oak Creek tragedy. Several of you have approached the Coalition to ask what you can do as a gurdwara to create dialogue and partnership with your local community. In response, the Coalition created toolkits on how to host two different events at your gurdwara:

  • Teacher Appreciation Day Toolkit – This toolkit is intended to help you organize a “Teacher Appreciation Day” at your local Gurdwara. The goals of such an event are to create better awareness of Sikhs, build relationships with local teachers, and inform school officials of Sikh school bullying concerns.
  • Welcoming the Community: Gurdwara Open House Toolkit – The intention of this event is to invite local elected officials, law enforcement officers, interfaith members, and educators to the gurdwara so that they can learn more about Sikhs and begin to build lasting relationships with the community.

Community Resources – Below are resources to help you educate others on Sikhi when participating in these events:

The Sikh Coalition would like to thank the Garden State Sikh Association (Bridgewater, NJ) for their guidance on these resource materials. As always, the Sikh Coalition urges all Sikhs to fearlessly practice their faith.
