When the Sikh Coalition first began in the days after 9/11, we hoped it would be a short-lived effort. We were confident that over time, anti-Sikh bias would decrease and our work would be unnecessary.

Instead, over the past four years, the Sikh Coalition has grown. This year, as the economy shrank, we doubled our staff, our offices and our budget. All of this is to keep up with the continued demand for our services and the increasingly complex discrimination issues that Sikhs face everywhere - from our local schools to our national airports.

And as our numbers have grown, so has our impact. We have moved from taking on single issue campaigns against local government agencies to advocating policy changes at the country's largest institution - the US military. Putting more money and resources in means that the Sikh community can now expect more out of the Coalition.

In 2006, we litigated a case against the New York City Metro Transit Authority. We fought locally for Sikhs' right to hold their jobs regardless of their religious appearance. This year, we took on not only regional campaigns, but state and national government agencies from New Jersey to California. Our increased budget has resulted in a stronger voice at the decision-making table for America's Sikhs.

Our supporters have continued to raise the bar and expect more of us, and we have tried our best to deliver.
