Frank MahoneyBurroughs v. Autozone

April 11, 2012 (Boston) – A Sikh employee, Frank MahoneyBurroughs, scored a significant victory in a religious discrimination lawsuit against his former employer, AutoZone, who harassed and then fired him for adopting the Sikh articles of faith. In addition to defeating the Fortune 500 auto parts company on a religious accommodation claim, Mr. MahoneyBurroughs, as part of a settlement agreement, will receive $75,000 in damages plus attorneys’ fees. Gurpreet Kherha v. Lexus

Paramus, NJ (March 17, 2010) - The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) issued a decision last week that a Sikh job applicant suffered discrimination by Tri-County Lexus. The EEOC is the federal agency charged with enforcing the nation's employment discrimination laws. The applicant, Gurpreet Singh Kherha, wanted to work as a sales representative at the Little Falls, New Jersey dealership, but was told to remove his religiously-mandated beard if he wanted the job. Raghbir Singh v. United States

Fresno, CA - (October 20, 2009) - The federal government has issued a policy allowing all Sikhs to serve as federal security officers while maintaining their turbans and beards. The decision was the result of a discrimination case filed by a Sikh security officer who was told that he could not maintain his turban and beard on the job. Read more »

 

Sukhbir Kaur v. National Wholesale Liquidators

New York, NY (November 18, 2008) - A Sikh woman who suffered racial, religious and sexual harassment on the job has obtained justice by standing up to her employer. In a settlement agreement, National Wholesale Liquidators (NWL), Mrs. Sukhbir Kaur's former employer, agreed to make changes to their employment policies and pay money damages to nine victims of harassment, including Mrs. Kaur. Harrington, et al. v. Metropolitan Transit Authority

New York, New York (July 18, 2005) - Five Sikh Station Agents bravely filed discrimination charges against the MTA this past Friday. The Sikh workers charge that a post-9/11 policy requiring them to brand their turbans with an MTA logo amounts to religious discrimination.Read more »
