SSA 1984 Rememberance Packet Overview

Suggested activities for 1984 Rememberance include the following:

"Remembering our Past" PowerPoint
This PowerPoint presentation is in the form of a Quiz complete with notes for each slide. It provides the presenters a structured guide to take their audience through the journey of Sikh history of the last 60 odd years, in a concise and engaging manner. (Download 1984 Presentation here)

"Disappearances in Punjab", Australian Dateline Video
This 45-minute documentary speaks to the human tragedy that the people of Punjab have suffered in the 1980s and 1990s. It speaks to the lack of judicial recourse for Sikhs, extra-judicial disappearances and the draconian laws under which Punjab police cracked down on the Punjab militancy. The timeline is post the Indian army attack on Darbar Sahib and the state sponsored November pogroms. It paints a clear, though chilling, picture about the impunity with which the police carried out atrocities on Sikhs in Punjab.

Hawaiyen video clip
Selected 12-minute clip from the Hindi movie Hawaiyen, focusing on the November pogroms, where Sikhs were targeted to be looted, raped and killed-- right in the heart of Indian capital city of Delhi. Courtesy: www.saintsoldiers.net.

Guidelines for a Candle Light Vigil
Includes sample flyer and Instructions. Testimonials of victims, which can be read aloud during the vigil, have also been included.

Reading list
For continuing the learning process, a list of books about the recent Sikh history and the present situation has been included.

Also, Ask your school or local library to obtain a book on Nov 1984 Pogroms. "Twenty Years of Impunity" can be used to learn more about the victims and the perpetrators of the 1984 Pogroms. Introducing this to your school library will provide all students with a valuable and accessible resource.
