March 25, 2010 (Washington, DC) - During the next few weeks, a new bill is likely to be introduced in the U.S. Congress that could finally end most forms of employment discrimination against Sikhs and other religious minorities in the United States. The proposed law is called the Workplace Religious Freedom Act (WRFA).

How Does WRFA Affect Sikhs?
Observant Sikhs continue to face discrimination by employers who refuse to accommodate dastaars (turbans) and kesh (unshorn hair). At times, Sikh employees are hidden from the public due to stereotypes about what American workers should look like. For example, Sikh employees can be moved from the sales floor to the stock room, so that they will not be seen by customers. If enacted, WRFA could end these discriminatory practices and expand employment opportunities for Sikhs.
Take Action Now
It is important for Sikhs nationwide to contact their members of Congress and insist that WRFA protect employees from workplace segregation. The Sikh Coalition has prepared a sample letter that you can sign and send in less than a minute.
