Dear Supporter Ji,

I officially joined the Sikh Coalition as Legal Director in August 2017, but my journey with this organization starts at the beginning. On September 11, 2001, I was part of the original group of student activists who realized that when our community was facing discrimination, backlash, and violence, we needed to band together to fight against ignorance and intolerance, and create a better future for ourselves.

Since then, the Sikh Coalition has worked to fiercely represent our community in hate crimes, bullying, racial profiling and workplace discrimination cases. Our work, with hundreds of clients over the last 16 years, is paving the way for the next generation, so our children won’t have to go through the same discrimination as they achieve their dreams.

This is why I am writing today to ask for your support.

I spent eleven years as a prosecutor in Chicago, Illinois, and I could not have imagined a job that was more important for protecting victim’s rights until I joined the Sikh Coalition. Now, just four months into being the Legal Director, I can’t envision doing anything but fighting for our civil rights. I do this work so my son, Anders, and my daughter, Anjali, can grow up in a world where they can be fearless. And today, as we sit down to Thanksgiving dinner, I am grateful that I have the privilege of doing this work for your family too.

We started the year by publicizing a landmark legal victory in our multiyear campaign to end religious discrimination in the U.S. military and we closed the year by recently sharing the victory of Dr. Jaswinder Pal Singh, an observant Sikh who courageously fought back against discriminatory hiring practices. However, it’s all the cases in between that you are also supporting.

For every legal story we can share, there are many more that we can’t disclose because it goes against the best interests of our clients. While your support of our work will fund future landmark employment discrimination cases that you’ll hear about, it also ensures that nearly 200 confidential legal intakes every year get handled as well. Somebody you likely know, even if you have never heard about their case, is depending on you for their legal resources.

On this Thanksgiving, I give thanks for your unwavering support. I hope we can count on your contributions as we continue our daily fight for the Sikh community and all Americans.

Chardi Kala,

Amrith Kaur
Legal Director
