Dear Supporter,
In 2018, I worked with the Sikh Coalition to deliver two Sikh awareness presentations to over 1,400 educators in the Norwalk School District in Connecticut.
I, along with members of the Norwalk Gurdwara, partnered with the Sikh Coalition because it equip communities with the educational resources, training and tools that empower us to make a lasting difference. We collaborated on this work because the more we deepen our grassroots educational work, the better off all of our children will be.
The trainings, combined with the Sikh Coalition’s remarkable, new Back To School Toolkit, gives every teacher in this district the ability to properly teach Sikhism to 11,000 public school students every year.
In 2018 alone, the Sikh Coalition has worked with community members all over the country to deliver dozens of Sikh awareness presentations to thousands of educators. In addition, they have presented at social studies conferences in Florida and Georgia. Thanks to the leadership of the Sikh Coalition, Colorado and Arizona became the seventh and eighth states, respectively, in America to include Sikhism in their state curriculum standards this year.
This work does not happen overnight — It took nearly two years to organize the teacher trainings in Norwalk with support from a local community organization and the school district. The Arizona and Colorado victories were years in the making, requiring hundreds of hours of staff time, financial resources and community support.
While my son is in college and daughter is in New York City pursuing her career, what still drives me as a parent is the belief that through these educational efforts, our shared Sikh experience in America continues to improve.
I know that if we continue to support the Sikh Coalition’s work, we will one day equip every teacher in America with the resources to accurately teach students about the Sikh community. Your support ensures each one of our Sikh children will feel respected, valued and safe in our schools.
In the last 2 weeks of the year, the Sikh Coalition still has to raise almost $700,000 to meet its fundraising goal for 2018. This work cannot continue into the next year without our support. Join me in making a donation to the Sikh Coalition.
