January 4, 2024 (Nationwide) — As the Sikh Coalition expands our work in the new year and beyond, we are excited to share that our team of professional staff is growing accordingly so that we can continue to serve the sangat.

In just the last few months, the Sikh Coalition has hired five new full time staff members. Senior Education Manager Savleen Singh joined our team in September, as did Senior Policy Manager Puneet Kaur Sandhu in November. Additionally, our new Media and Communications Director Abby Kelly Gualdoni and Senior Staff Attorney Sahel Kaur Sra both start with the organization today! And later this month, we will welcome a new Senior State Policy Manager.

Given the depth and breadth of our work across the legal, advocacy, community development, education, and media spaces, we intend to continue building capacity. We are currently hiring for a Senior Federal Policy Manager to continue growing our presence and impact in Washington, DC; applications are being accepted on a rolling basis, so please apply today or share widely with your networks!

Finally, last week, the Sikh Coalition said a bittersweet farewell to Amrith Kaur Aakre, our Legal Director of six and a half years. Under Amrith’s leadership, the Sikh Coalition’s legal team successfully litigated religious accommodation and bias-based school bullying cases, advocated on behalf of hate crime victims and provided rapid response legal services, submitted public comments to numerous federal agencies and testified before Congress on discrimination matters, drafted numerous significant amicus briefs (including one cited by the Supreme Court in a landmark 2023 employment decision), and hosted annual legal conferences focused on bringing the issues facing the Sikh community to a broader audience. The Sikh Coalition team, along with individual clients and entire sangats from coast to coast, are grateful to Amrith for her ferocity and tenacity in achieving all of these victories and more throughout her tenure. We are excited that Amrith is transitioning from the Sikh Coalition into an incredibly impactful role in public service: In the months ahead, she will be sworn in as a Senior Executive Service member and take up a new position as District Director for the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s Midwest Region.

In the meantime, the Sikh Coalition’s legal work remains in excellent hands: Deputy Legal Director Giselle Klapper, who has served under Amrith’s leadership for more than six years, will step into the role of Interim Legal Director, with additional capacity to be provided by Sikh Coalition board members Judge Manpreet K. Singh and Nitasha Kaur Sawhney.

We are excited for this latest wave of passionate leaders joining our growing team and look forward to continuing to serve the sangat in this new year.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
