May 8, 2024 (National) – Today, the Sikh Coalition is excited to announce the appointment of Harman Singh as the organization’s new Executive Director.

Harman Singh joined the Sikh Coalition in November  2021 as Senior Manager of Education and transitioned into a new role as Policy and Education Director in July of last year. In the course of leading the organization’s education work and advocacy campaigns, he has testified in front of state legislatures, overseen congressional and administration engagement on a range of topics, and relentlessly advocated for the inclusion, security, and civil rights of Sikhs. For the past three months, Singh served as Co-Interim Executive Director alongside Graham F. West.

Prior to joining the Sikh Coalition, Singh spent seven years working in higher education as a PhD Program Coordinator & Academic Auditor at the University of Michigan and as an Academic Advisor at Wayne State University. He also co-founded Seva4Everybody, a grassroots organization that focuses on basic needs support for residents of Detroit and mentorship for Sikh youth.  Singh will bring his previous experience inside and outside of the Sikh Coalition to the role of Executive Director as the organization continues its work on behalf of the sangat in the community, courtrooms, classrooms, and halls of Congress.

“I am honored to be stepping into this role at the Sikh Coalition as we continue to defend and expand Sikh civil rights in the United States and push for a generational shift in Sikh awareness across the country,” said Harman Singh. “I look forward to collaborating with sangats across the nation as we face a pivotal moment for the panth, including our response to the threats we continue to face, from hate, discrimination, and bullying to transnational repression from abroad.”

In addition to Singh’s appointment, the Sikh Coalition’s Board of Directors have also announced the following promotions:

  • Graham F. West will serve as Managing Director of Communications and Policy. West joined the Sikh Coalition in 2019 as the Media and Communications Director and recently served as Programs Director and Co-interim Executive Director.
  • Rucha Kaur will serve as Managing Director of Education and Community Development. Kaur joined the Sikh Coalition as Community Development Director in 2018, and recently served as the principal author on the Sikh Coalition’s new landmark study, “Where Are You Really From?” A National Sikh School Climate Report
  • Giselle Klapper will serve as Legal Director. Klapper originally joined the Sikh Coalition as a Legal Fellow in 2017 before being hired as a Staff Attorney full time, and has served as a Senior Staff Attorney, Deputy Legal Director, and Interim Legal Director.

“Harman’s tenure at the Sikh Coalition has proven that he is the right leader to take our advocacy, community development, education, legal, and media engagement work to new heights,” said Narinder Singh, Sikh Coalition Executive Board Chairman. “As the Sikh Coalition enters a new chapter with this slate of directorial leadership solidifying our institutional knowledge and bringing new energy to the challenges of the moment, we are confident in our staff’s ability to move our mission forward.”

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
