June 6, 2025 (Washington, DC) — This morning, Congresswoman Mary Miller (R-IL) posted on X (Twitter) that it was “deeply troubling” for a Sikh to lead prayer at the House of Representatives, because the United States was founded as a “Christian nation.” Congresswoman Miller initially referred to the Sikh man as a “Muslim,” but she edited—and then deleted entirely—her post.

Sikhs will not be intimidated or bullied out of public life by such small-minded prejudice. Moreover, we must be clear that no community should be smeared as un-American because of their faith: Congresswoman Miller should educate herself on the differences between Sikhs and Muslims, and she must also recognize that people of all backgrounds should be welcome in the halls of Congress.
