September 1, 2026 (Nationwide) — In the coming weeks, the United States will commemorate 25 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001—a tragedy that changed the course of U.S. and world history. 

The Sikh Coalition will mark the occasion by joining Americans across the country in honoring the wide range of lives lost and forever changed on that day and in the weeks, months, and years after. This includes, but is not limited to, those who were killed in the attacks and their families, first responders who suffered long-term medical complications for their heroism, members of our and other communities harmed or killed by subsequent hate violence, and the countless individuals around the world who suffered and died due to the far-reaching effects of the so-called “Global War on Terror.” We are also undertaking several specific areas of work to mark the anniversary throughout the next two months.

TAKE ACTION on Post-9/11 Policy Priorities: In partnership with allies at the South Asian Coalition, the Sikh Coalition has built campaigns around five policy actions Congress can take now to begin to address the harms of the post-9/11 era, including in areas like hate crimes, immigration, surveillance, and more. Additionally, we have created a toolkit for any sangat member across the country to engage their local- and state-level elected officials in resolutions that commemorate 9/11 and reaffirm commitments to pluralism and justice.

South Asian Coalition Community Hub: We also encourage sangat members to explore and share 25-yearslater.org, a full learning hub established by the South Asian Coalition. This website, which is being updated continuously in the lead-up to the anniversary, features the policy work described above, as well as:

  • Resources for schools, including lesson plans with contributions from the Sikh Coalition developed over the past several years; and
  • Media commentary, including the above-linked pieces. Note that additional content featuring Sikh voices will be added to the site soon!

Commemorating the Anniversary of the Murder of Balbir Singh Sodhi: Finally, on September 15, the Sikh Coalition will join the Sodhi family and the Revolutionary Love Project for a vigil in Mesa, Arizona, to commemorate the anniversary of the murder of Balbir Singh Sodhi. The Sikh Coalition was glad to contribute resources and advocacy content to RLP’s learning hub, and are assisting in promoting the event to local and national press. Sangat in Mesa are invited to attend the event in person, and everyone else can watch a livestream from across the nation.

In the weeks ahead, we look forward to sharing more resources as well as additional commemorative events around the anniversary and the Sikh Coalition’s founding. In the meantime, we continue to urge gurdwarae, sangats, and individuals across the country to stay vigilant against the potential increased risk of hate violence.
