On August 14, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released their 2025 hate crimes data reflecting all of the hate crimes known to the FBI nationwide for the previous calendar year. In their press release, the FBI shared that hate crimes saw a slight decrease of 7 percent since the previous year’s data was published.

An analysis from Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC, however, found that anti-Sikh hate crime incidents specifically increased by 25 percent, from 142 in 2024 to 177 in 2025. As a reminder, this is an undercount: The data reflects only the information that the FBI has, and many law enforcement organizations across the country either report zero hate crimes or do not provide any data at all. On August 15, the Sikh Coalition partnered with Interfaith America to host a special weekend of events, including roundtable discussions and a public panel titled “The Spirit of Seva: Sikh Reflections on the Common Good at America’s 250th,” in Houston, Texas. This collaboration brought together nearly 20 Sikh leaders from across the country, and was attended by nearly 50 community members across the civic, interfaith, and business sectors.

In addition to our work with Interfaith America, which you can learn more about here, the Sikh Coalition also held a Know Your Rights discussion with local Sikh truck drivers. Our staff also visited two gurdwarae in Houston—Sikh National Center and The Sikh Center of the Gulf Coast Area—to discuss pressing community concerns, including policies impacting truckers and transnational repression.

On August 5, the Sikh Coalition joined sangats across the country in commemorating the 14th anniversary of the Oak Creek, Wisconsin gurdwara shooting that ultimately led to the deaths of seven sangat members and wounding others. We honor the memories of Paramjit Kaur Saini, Sita Singh, Ranjit Singh, Prakash Singh, Suveg Singh Khattra, Satwant Singh Kaleka, and Baba Punjab Singh. We also remain inspired by those who persevered through life-altering injuries—including Bhai Santokh Singh and Lt. Brian Murphy—and many others whose lives were forever changed by the trauma of the attack.

This summer, the Sikh Coalition facilitated workshops at Sikh camps across the country as part of our commitment to support youth sangat members. Led by our Community Development team, the sessions focused on critical issues such as responding to bullying, building confidence, and embracing the Sikh identity. Altogether, our team conducted 19 different workshops at gurdwarae and camps in Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Michigan.

This month, the South Asian Coalition (SAC)—of which the Sikh Coalition is a member—launched the “25 Years Later: Stories of Survival and Solidarity” Community Hub. This platform includes educational resources, video testimonials, media, toolkits, and more all related to the upcoming anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The Sikh Coalition is glad to have served as a partner in curating this content, including by leading the development of advocacy campaigns associated with the anniversary. Visit our take action page to contact your elected officials in the U.S. Congress about five different policy asks, as well as to read our guidance on how to pursue state- and local-level proclamations commemorating the anniversary and the subsequent harms of hate and discrimination on communities across the country.
