September 18, 2026 (New York, NY) – The National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City recently opened a special exhibition that includes the Sikh American experience as part of the broader story of service in the 25 years since September 11, 2001.

Titled In Their Honor: 25 Years of 9/11 Inspired Service, the exhibition explores how individuals and communities responded to 9/11 by committing themselves to public service and helping others. Among the stories featured is that of U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Simratpal Singh, whose military service became part of a landmark fight for the right of Sikh servicemembers to maintain their articles of faith while serving their country.

“In the aftermath of 9/11, our community faced hate and violence–and we also showed up for each other,” said Harman Singh, Sikh Coalition Executive Director. “Seeing that story reflected at the museum helps ensure the Sikh American experience is remembered.”

The Sikh Coalition and Dr. Harpreet Singh, President of Harvard Sikh Center, worked closely with museum curators to help shape this inclusion, ensuring the exhibit reflects not just what our community endured after 9/11, but how we responded to it–with unwavering resilience, solidarity, and service. We extend our gratitude to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum for helping tell this important story.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
