August 11, 2025 (Nationwide) — Last Thursday, the Sikh Coalition hosted “Challenging the Darkness: The Life and Legacy of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra” as a part of commemorating the 30th anniversary of Bhai Khalra’s murder this September.

Through the teach-in, more than 140 attendees learned about the historical context of Bhai Khalra’s life, work, and murder; the modern threat of Indian transnational repression; and the sangat’s reflections on his legacy 30 years later. The Sikh Coalition was also honored to host a conversation with Navkiran Kaur Khalra, the daughter of Bhai Khalra who continues his work through the Khalra Mission Organization, for the final session.

In addition to Navkiran Kaur Khalra, we would like to thank all of our speakers who participated: R.S. Bains, Satnam Singh Bains, Jaskaran Sandhu, Dr. Tejpaul Bainiwal, Dr. Yousef Munayyer, Manpreet Kaur, Gurmeet Kaur, and Professor Mallika Kaur.

As a part of Sikh Coalition’s work to commemorate the life and work of Bhai Khalra, the Sikh Coalition has created a list of advocacy ‘action items’ for sangat members who would like to honor his legacy. These asks include:

  • Proposing a local resolution to honor Bhai Khalra in your city, state or school district;
  • Joining our organizational letter urging Secretary of State Marco Rubio to designate India as a Country of Particular Concern; or
  • Sharing our free advocacy tool for California sangat members to contact their Assemblymember urging them to support the state’s transnational repression bill.

Finally, the Sikh Coalition is also excited to share that we will be hosting a congressional briefing about Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra on Capitol Hill on September 18. We look forward to sharing more information about this event in the near future.

As always, the Sikh Coalition urges you to practice your faith fearlessly.
