On Two-Month Anniversary of Indianapolis Shooting, Sikh Community Still Awaits Answers

June 15, 2021 (Indianapolis, IN) -- Two months after the shooting at an Indianapolis FedEx ground facility left eight people dead and forever altered the course of so many other lives, law enforcement agencies have yet to provide a significant public update into their ongoing investigation into the attack.

“Our community is grateful for the outpouring of support from so many in our city and others across the country as we have weathered this tragedy together,” said Gaganpal “Garry” Singh Dhaliwal (he/him), a Sikh community member in Indianapolis whose family works at the FedEx facility. “It remains deeply important, however, that law enforcement authorities do their best to explain why this horrific event occurred--to help those who lost loved ones find peace, and help our community prevent further tragedy in the future.”

The Sikh Coalition’s legal team--which worked to provide support to survivors and grieving families in the aftermath of the shooting, and is representing three clients on pro bono legal matters--has reached out to local and federal law enforcement requesting substantive and public updates on these issues.

”While we have received private assurances that the investigation is still ongoing, law enforcement authorities have rarely spoken publicly about their progress since the first few chaotic days after the attack,” said Amrith Kaur (she/her), Sikh Coalition Legal Director. “It remains a matter of justice to have a better understanding of why this shooting happened--including a transparent investigation of whether bias played a role in the shooter’s choice to target this particular facility.”

The Sikh Coalition continues to engage the Indianapolis sangat (Sikh community) as well as local, state, and federal elected officials and law enforcement leaders. We will continue to provide updates as they emerge.
